Before I left for the mountains a few years ago, my brain released into REM in the night. Fading into the scene, scrim thru the pressure. Sand zipping and scraping skin, fighting to get in & scratch the eyes.

Hot & hard to breathe. A landscape vastly bleak in design, but much movement in the dithering sandstorm. A lonesome juniper at the foot of something in between a sandy dune and packed mountain. I hear clicking and snarling.

My vision reveals an antsy horse, tied to a branch. They’re seeping abysmal smoke. Seeming solid and able to be passed through all at once. Nearby, a chattering skeleton. Is this a naked bringer of death? Death to the woes that held me back. Barer of good news.

Now on the other side, I envisioned a space for renewal. Stepping into the soft carpet of brass flora and pondering upon this Boney Balm. Not so barren after all.
