Wiktionary

It’s the second Spring I’m spending at this apartment in the Hudson Valley. It feels a little tight, but the space to create is there. My drafting table broke during the move from NYC. It was wobble-zone when I did use it. I’ve been working from the dining room table for most of the year. Much like mothers do when they have projects to do. Consistent and feeling much happier, I painted. Paintings that are out of the vein of what I have been doing with artwork.

These past weeks, I painted what was in front of me. My partner bought watermelon and I painted it. I also painted from memory. It was the flowers. A yellow one from the watermelon. A pink tulip imaginatively plucked to stand in my water jar for my paint set.

In the search of warmth and much needed energy, the urge to paint something juicy and full of life was apparent. Sweeping paint onto paper patiently. Meditation. Slow and steady.

The pink tulip; I painted it with a friend in mind. We don’t talk anymore, but often when I see tulips I think of her. I’m not sure why I did this, as I do not have particularly pleasant memories of her. I want to remember something nice about her. A struggle to focus on the good stuff for several years in a row, but I think I’m finally making a breakthru.

The last time she visited, my Mother left that tomato behind. After I painted it, I ate it like one would eat an apple. That’s all right, isn’t it? It was close to flavorless. I did not enjoy it. & that might be when my spark of vibrance fled.

As far as music goes for the season, it’s been mostly (nu)disco.

Here’s a playlist I put together for you:
